Use Automatic Read More Jump Break With Thumbnail On Blogger

Posted : Tuesday, March 08, 2011 | Post Author : Paul Crowe | 146 comments

Blogger Read More Automatic

On Blogger you have the option to add a jump break to your posts, so the posts will be displayed with just a short summery on the home page and a link to read the full post will be below.The jump break has a number of great advantages, if you display full posts on your home page it will severely slow down the load time, Also With the jump break in place visitors that land on your home page will see a selection of your posts without the need to scroll.It’s also more professional looking and as visitors have to click through to the full post it increases page views.

Update again 05/12/2012 – If you are using this hack you will notice it stopped working.The script caused this as it stopped working.I have added a new script here so it works fine but if you added it before the date above you will need to make a change.

Simply find this line of code in your template :

http://bloggerblogwidgets.googlecode.com/files/auto_readmore_blogger.js

And replace it with this :

http://widgets.way2blogging.org/blogger-widgets/w2b-auto-readmore-blogger.js

Sorry for any inconvenience, these things happen sometimes.

In this Blogger Tip i have a script that will automatically turn your posts into read more summary’s on your blogs home page with a few added extras.Here are some of the features of an auto Read More along with a live demo :

– Your posts will automatically be displayed as short summary’s with a read more link.
– An image from the post will be re sized into a thumbnail and displayed beside the summery.
– You can choose how much text is displayed in the summery.
– You can choose the size of the thumbnail.
– All Previous posts will also have the jump break so you don’t need to go through your archive adding it.

Live Demo – I have added the code to a test blog using the Simple Template from the Blogger template designer and you can see it here – Auto Read More Demo.

The script is used on Most Magazine Templates i publish on my Blogger Templates Site so i thought why not make it available on all blogs ? As well as posts having the jump break on your home page it will also be used on your label pages and archive pages.

Update 07 June 2011 – I have improved this code so your static pages will display properly.With other versions of this code your static pages will have the read more added but will not open when clicked.Now your pages will display fully without the read more jump break.Update helped with thanks to Harish from Way2Blogging.

If you added the old code you will need to replace it with the updated code.To see exactly what you need to replace you can see the old code here with instructions.

Add Auto Read More Post Summary’s To Your Blog

Step 1. In Your (New Design) Blogger Dashboard Click The Drop Down Menu For Your Blog > Choose Template > Then Edit Html > Now Proceed > Tick The Expand Widget Templates Box as shown in the video Below :

Step 2. Find the following piece of code in your blogs Html : (Click CTRL and F for a search bar to help find the code – More Info)

</head>

Step 3. Copy the following code and paste it Directly Above / Before </head>

<script type=’text/javascript’>
var thumbnail_mode = “no-float” ;

summary_noimg = 430;
summary_img = 340;
img_thumb_height = 120;
img_thumb_width = 120;

</script>
<script type=’text/javascript’ src=’http://widgets.way2blogging.org/blogger-widgets/w2b-auto-readmore-blogger.js’ ></script>

Important

The code in red sets how the post summary’s are displayed.Remember if a post has an image it will be re sized into a thumbnail to be displayed beside the summery.If the post does not have an image just a text summery will be displayed.

summary_ noimg= 430; –> The length of the summery if the post does not have a thumbnail.
summary_img = 340; –> The length of the summery if there is an image in the post that will be converted into a thumbnail.
null_thumb_height = 120; –> The height in pixels of the thumbnail.
null_thumb_width = 120; –> The width in pixels of the thumbnail.

Step 4. Find the following piece of code in your blogs Html : (Click CTRL and F for a search bar to help find the code – More Info)

<data:post.body/>

Step 5. Replace <data:post.body/> With The Code Below

<b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == “item”‘>
<data:post.body/>
<b:else/>
<b:if cond=’data:blog.pageType == “static_page”‘>
<data:post.body/>
<b:else/>
<div expr:id='”summary” + data:post.id’>
<data:post.body/>
</div>
<script type=’text/javascript’>
createSummaryAndThumb(“summary<data:post.id/>”);
</script>
<div style=’clear: both;’/>
<span class=’rmlink’ style=’font-weight:bold;padding:5px;float:right;text-align:right;’><a expr:href=’data:post.url’ >Read more … </a></span>
</b:if>
</b:if>

Note – You can change the text in red from Read More to “Continue Reading”, “Read Full Post” or anything you like.

Note 1. You should try to have the first image in your posts as close to square as possible so they work well when used as thumbnails on your home page.Images that are for example rectangle in shape will appear distorted when they are re sized.I use a version of this script on this blog and always add an image at the top of the posts that are close to square, then size then wont make a big impact on the appearance.Remember it’s the first image in each post that is used as a thumbnail.

Step 6. Save Your Template.

That’s it for this Blogger tip, All your posts including all archived posts will now be displayed with a summary and read more on your home page, labels pages and archive pages.Check out more of our Blogger Tips and Blog Gadgets.

    2. @ Mary – I think it only picks up images as thumbnails, I’m on my phone now when I’m back at the laptop i will try it with a video.There is a template that is set up for videos called Blogger Tube you can see it here – Blogger Tube Template.I must check out the script on that template if this one does not work with video.

    7. Thanks a lot Paul! I just added it to my site and works like a charm!

      Quick question: Is there a way to lock the aspect ratio of the image thumbnails? Since images that go with different posts have different width-to-height proportions, the thumbnail images in my homepage are slightly distorted.

      Hi
      Can you help please? This worked wonderfully on my home page, but on checking my other stand alone pages, they had the jump break but then would not open up further when I clicked the ‘read more’ link. They just stay as the shortened version.
      Thanks

    9. @ The Tween Factor – Great shout, i have seen the problem and managed to fix it.I have updated the code so your static pages will not use the jump break.So replace the SECOND section of code with the updated code in the tutorial, the first section is OK and does not need to be changed.

      Paul.

    10. @Emre – The thumbnails have to be the same size on all posts.Try to make the first image on your posts be close to square.I use a version of this script on this blog and you will notice i have an image at the top of each post that is always square or close to it.I try to find an image that is simply decortive and i think it actually adds to the look of the blog.

      ReplyDelete

      Every template has an opening and closing head tag.If you still cant find it use the contact form via the link in the top menu and i will find it for you.

      Great little tutorial, but I can’t seem to find:

      in my template, could it be called something else?

      ReplyDelete

    25. @ Raythan – You must have a complicated template i hope you backed it up first ? The only reason to have more than one instance of that tag would be to cover static pages on an old templates or a different script for the Read more.Once you back up your template you can try each one to see which works.

      I see and reply to all the questions i can so please don’t use caps and bold text.

    42. Hi Paul

      Iโ€™m an absolute newbie at this, and hoping you can assist. I found a template that I enjoy using on my blog, and as it stands, it automatically posts a summary and thumbnail of new posts on the homepage. I believe it cuts off at 20 posts (or by date, Iโ€™m not sure which), and any older posts beyond that are displayed in full.

      I really like the format and style and all I want to do is remove that โ€˜cut-offโ€™ and have all posts being displayed with summary and thumbnail on the homepage regardless of currency.

      Would you be able to assist me or point me to the right direction? Iโ€™ve got a link of the template I used if you’d like to see it.

      Many thanks in advance!

  22. Hey Paul! Maybe it’s my first comment on your blog. Your post is always awesome. I have a question to ask. Can I change the font size of post summary just like your blog? Please , help me …

    ReplyDelete

  23. @Shakil Wahid
    I think you can change the font size, someone feel free to correct me. I believe you need to add is this to the 4th line of code from the bottom of the code in step 5.
    font-size:10px;

    The forth line from the bottom currently looks like.

    span class=’rmlink’ style=’font-weight:bold;padding:5px;float:right;text-align:right;’

    Therefore once you add the font attribute to it it will look like.

    span class=’rmlink’ style=’font-weight:bold;padding:5px;float:right;text-align:right;font-size:10px;’

    Then just adjust the px size to the size you want. I think that’s all there is to it, but I have not tested it.

    ReplyDelete

  24. @ Jaime, a lot of thanks for your response. I have tried your suggestion but it can’t increase the font of post summary. But It increases the font of the text “Read more…” .
    But I want to increase my post summary font not Read more font.

    Whatever, thanks….

    ReplyDelete

  25. @Shakil, wish it would have worked for ya. Maybe Paul will get back to us about how to do that. I’m curious now. My guess is that it will take some sort of javascript to alter the summery text without altering the entire post text. I know next to zero about javascript.

    @Paul, if you have time would you mind showing us how to adjust the summery text size without adjusting the whole post text. I am curious about how to do this and I know Shakil is. Paul thanks for any help you can give.

  41. I used this and found a way to keep the thumbnails proportionate. The text wrapping is a bit wonky with some posts, but at least the thumbnails aren’t distorted.

    Use a percentage instead of a number for your thumbnails, like this:

    img_thumb_height = “25%”;
    img_thumb_width = “25%”;

    I wish there were a way of specifying only a fixed width or only a fixed height, but if I omit either the width or the height in the code, then the whole thing doesn’t work.

  66. We were using a similar script until we got too frustrated with the lack of customization ability, and the fact that the thumbnail images were always messed up. So we coded a better script that provides more customization and fixes the thumbnail issues!

  71. Hello Paul Crowe!

    I have been using your tips and tricks for sometime now, and I must say you are awesome.
    Till lately on this ‘Automatic Read More Jump Break’, everything seemed to work fine except the number of posts shown on pages are inconsistent. I want 18 post on each page but as I publish a new post, that action may add up to the number of post on main page or reduce but never reach 18.
    Sometime when I publish new post only that post will appear on the main page other will go to ‘old posts’
    My blog URL is http://fullsoka.blogspot.com/
    Thank you in advance

  97. This is amazing! Thank you sooooo much! Only one problem: in a few of the summaries, the text is all gibberish (code that I have no clue where it came from) altho when you open the post it is fine. Any ideas on what I should do? This is only the case in a few posts that I have found.
    Also, is there any way to make my social media buttons and other widgets only appear at the end of the full posts, and not on the main page?
    Thank you soooo much!!
