Great video, thanks for the information!
ReplyDeletePaul, thanks for both of the posts. Really interesting. I'm very likely to follow your advice!
ReplyDeleteMy question is: is this how you registered your domain?
Oh, and are there any limitations on bandwidth, visitors etc? I don't think there are any, but let's make it completely clear :)
Thanks again!
Dear.... its just a awesome video... ! Any idea where should I buy a dot com domain at cheap ? and can you please tell me which software you used to make this video ? please ? it is a nice software and nice video .... ! great pleasures to you..... ! :D
ReplyDeleteDoes my feed automatically redirect or do I need to create a new feed via feedburner?
ReplyDeletePaul,
ReplyDeleteI followed your advice yesterday, this is the message I've been seeing since yesterday from my dashboard "Your blog is in transition"
My new [dot com] address is not working, yet. Do you know if this process takes a few days? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Could you answer our questions, Paul?
ReplyDeleteThanks.
@ (Name In Other Language) - As i say in the video and post buy directly from Blogger through the publishing settings in your dashboard.
ReplyDelete@ Cassie - You can keep using the same feed you burned with the blogspot address as it will redirect.Or you could create another feed making sure not to delete the old one as it will keep the old subscribers updated. The thing you don't want to do is change the address in the current feed as it would then lose the old subscribers. To sum up in my opinion leave it as it is.
ReplyDeleteI'm having all kinds of problems with purchasing a custom domain name. I went through the entire process, received a confirmation email yesterday, my domain still isn't working, it is showing up in my dashboard, yet on my Google account, it is not showing that I purchased it. I've been on for hours reading and trying to figure out what to do. I'm so frustrated, everywhere I click on Google or Blogger, gets me no help or resolve. When I tried logging in to try to buy a new domain, it tells me to contact support, which is funny, because I have clicked everywhere and not found any support. It's like taking to an automatted machine on a call. :( I really wanted this to work, I wanted a custom domain for my humble little family blog. If anyone knows how I can make direct contact with Blogger for help, I would be so grateful.
ReplyDelete@ Twisted Tool - Everything works as it does now there is no extra limits on bandwidth, visitors etc.Blogger does use Picasa web albums to host images you upload and there are limits in place (custom domain or blogspot) however they would not come into play unless you used a huge amount of images.I have uploaded thousands and I'm not near the limit.
ReplyDelete@ Marissa - Usually the transition takes less than 30 minutes. It may just be your browser cache, you should clear your cache and check again.Search online for instruction on how to clear the cache for your browser. Also while in transition the blogspot address is still available.
ReplyDelete@ Marissa - Not sure if my reply to your other Comment overlapped. As i have said on a few occasions getting in contact with actual people connected to any Google product is next to impossible.
ReplyDeleteIs the domain for your Life On Our Side.. Blog ? I was brought directly to the Blogspot address, you had said you were seeing the in transition message ?
Hi Paul,
ReplyDeleteI switched back to the blogspot.com domain, clicking on my url was taking me to page could not be found, so I switched back. Now my blog and new post is showing up after switching back to blogspot.com
(I appreciate you taking time to answer my questions!)
@ Marissa - What ! Patience is a virtue :D Seriously your blog could be accessed via Blogspot anyway and it's not like a million people were seeing the transition message. You should switch it back to the custom domain, clear your cache and it should be working, if not let me know.
ReplyDeleteHi Paul,
ReplyDeleteHa! :) Patience has never been one of my better virtues! :P (But remember, I've been trying to fix this for hours with only dead end links) :)
I cleared my cache and used Window Washer to clean everything.
I found out for whatever reason, my domain purchase was cancelled. I purchased the domain name while using my iPad, then had all this trouble after I logged in on my laptop. I got an email from Google telling me the mobile id didn't match with where I'm trying to log in today. Anyway, I had to re-purchase a domain name and now it's working well. (Checked my card, the first transaction indeed was cancelled)
I appreciate all your time you've given trying to help me fix my problem! I will be posting soon about getting a new custom domain and I will be including a link back to your video/website. :)
(I don't comment too much, but I would like to take this time to say that I follow your blog and read most every post, I've learned a lot of fantastic tips from you.) Thank you!
@ Marissa - I'm delighted it has been resolved. It's not good to tell everyone they are stupid not having a custom domain and how easy it is then they cant get one. When it comes to Blogging you really do need to be patient at times, on a Wordpress blog i had a few years ago i couldn't get a domain connected for almost a month ! In the end the problem was i started the domain name with a capital letter in the DNS settings, so simple but i was only learning at the time.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work with Life on our side of the mountain !
Paul, if you buy a custom domain, does not have risks, such as Alexa rank and pagerank dropped down!
ReplyDelete@ Vicky - Your new domain would have no page rank or alexa rank so yes you would loose both. These are things to consider if for example you are selling advertising. The blogspot domain would continue to be returned in search results and of course then redirect to the new domain. So you shouldnt see a drop in traffic as a result.
ReplyDeletepaul, i already have a custom domain! so then how do I get my rank back? please let me know
ReplyDeleteHi Paul. I started my transition 3.5 days ago, and got a message that it woul take 3 days. For a few days I could see the .blogspot, but got the transition message on the .com. (not found, if owner, please sign in) One friend could pick up posts on her phone, but others said they could see the thumbnail but nothing more. For the last 24 hours I can get into New Post, and Edit Post etc, but can't see the blog at either address. I have cleared the cache (I'm on iPad at the moment) but still no improvement. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteHi again. I have been going through the tabs on my account to see if I have missed an instruction.
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean I have to do something? . . .
[ Redirect the naked domain (http://xxx.com) to http://www.xxx.com
Change redirect
To enable this redirect, you must change the A record with your domain host.]
thank you, Paul!
ReplyDeleteUlla
@ Benta - Were did you get the domain ? If you bought it from Blogger you dont need to touch anything it will be connected for you.
ReplyDelete@ Vicky - It's a new domain and things like page rank don't just switch.Your blog wont loose traffic or search traffic with the redirect in place. But your new domain will have no page rank or alexa rank until it builds again. Both these things are only important when selling direct advertising, apart from that they are meaningless.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reply Paul. I bought it from Blogger the way you said to in this post, but now it's 4 days and my blog is un-accessable - and I'm getting a bit scared!!!
ReplyDelete@ Benta - That's not good at all i can understand you being scared.Bet it's better to resolve the issue than get scared :D .
ReplyDeleteThe good news is you have bought it, you can see in the whois data it was registered on the 16th (http://who.godaddy.com/whois.aspx?domain=slikstitches.com&prog_id=GoDaddy).
Now i don't like that you mention the the domain settings, have you logged into the registrar and changed anything ?
Did you get an Email from Google Checkout and one From Google Apps ?
In your settings under publishing you will see "Your Domain" is it slikstitches.com ?
Hi Paul, thanks for helping me with this.
ReplyDeleteSomething happened with the account setup, and I got confused whether I was using my gmail address, or the blog website
Ive got an email from google apps, and another from google checkout. When I try to sign in to google apps for Slikstitches.com as Benta@Slikstitches.com I get the message "You are trying to access Google Apps Administrator Control Panel with the following Google Account:
benta@slikstitches.com
However, you are already signed in as:
bentahickley@gmail.com
You can either cancel this request or switch to a new Google Account to access Google Apps Administrator Control Panel. "
so I [switch accounts] and get to the next stage, but dont know what to do next
In [settings] => [publishing] the domain is Slikstitches.com with a tick to redirect slikstitches.com to slikstitches.com. Um double check, yes, that's what it says ... copy & paste ... Redirect SLIKstitches.com to www.SLIKstitches.com ... shouldn't that be www.slikstitches.blogspot.com to slikstitches.com?
I've obviously bitten off more than I can chew here. I'm happy to chuck money into the tips jar if you can sort me out here!!!
thank you very much, paul
ReplyDeleteReply continued . . . I don't think I've been into the registrer! I woke up at 4am thinking maybe I hadn't finished set up. I can sign in on the google account ( I understand the switch comment now,) but once it tries to go to [continue setup] it crashes each time.
ReplyDeleteI followed the blogger email link for " if you have any problems " but it doesn't really help, so it's you I need!
@ Benta - Can you send me an Email to paul @ spiceupyourblog.com and we will have a better chance of resolving this than in the comments.
ReplyDeleteI just cant believe how easy it is ! I did think about it but thought there would be lots of settings, thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteIf I had disqus on my blog how do I get the comments back?
ReplyDeletewew. ill rather choose blogger than wordpress.horay!
ReplyDeleteOok I bought a custom domain 4 days ago and never got a email or nothing and its still saying its in transition so I thought the order didint go through I tried buying it again and it says this domain name is in order so I guess it went through but its still saying its in transition any help??
ReplyDelete@ Heal the world - I can see your blog with the domain conected you need to clear the cache on your browser.Search Google for how to clear the cache for instructions.
ReplyDeleteHi paul i made a Mistake i bought a domain symbianfan.com and i went back to blogger and typed symbianfan.com manually and changed my domain address.
ReplyDeletewhat will happen now please paul reply
Thanks paul crowe you think exactly like i do, i was confused to changing my domain or not but now i will in a few days :D
ReplyDeleteI purchased a custom domain a few days ago, but now my new post aren't showing up on the blogger Dashboard "Blog's I'm Following" list. Do you know why?
ReplyDelete@ Mandi - The followers gadget should not change so I'm not sure why it's not showing.
ReplyDelete@Mandi
ReplyDeletei think your blog In Transition.
After Transition ends, Blog's I'm Following" list should be visible.

Hi there - I just switched (a few hours ago) and am having the same problem and am hoping it is transition too :-)
DeleteAlso wanted to say this blog has been a fabulous resource for me and I am enjoying the clearly presented information. THANK YOU Paul!
Had problem during custom domain registration through blogger, when I was in second step i click back button to make few correction in the first step, but i was unable to go further after that,a message was displayed
ReplyDeletelike this-"We found an existing order for this domain. Please contact support."
I do not have further idea regarding the problem help me what should i do for registration
Hiya, Paul!
ReplyDeleteBlogger changed companies since you posted this last. They no longer go thru GoDaddy.com and they are taking at least 3 days to transition you over. Though the only thing that remained the same was the $10 price. :)
I just purchased my domain and hope I did everything right. Thanks for the post :)
i had follow the same step as shown is video, but it says i have brought domain for Google sites
ReplyDeleteHmm, they charged me the 10 dollars, yet when I try to go to the domain, it doesn't exist.
ReplyDeleteI checked my credit card bill, and they deducted it 2 weeks ago.
I wonder how I straighten this out.
Thanks for your help!
@ Kathleen - That's not right something must be up.First off "clear the cache" on your computer.Search Google for "How to clear cache" if you dont know how.Let me know if this works so I'll know for future referance if the cache is an issue. If thats not it post your problem in the Blogger help forum here - http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/blogger .
ReplyDeleteHi Paul, I followed your instructions and everything looks good. However, I follow my own blog to make sure posts show up, and my posts are not showing up in my dashboard, and that leads me to believe my readers cannot see them either unless they type in my url. My site has no feed. Do you know how to fix this? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhen I try to buy the domain from blogger and proceed with buying it I get the following message: "We found an existing order for this domain. Please contact support." As I understand this message means that I had previously tried to buy the domain, which is true, but then I had no money on my credit card. Can someone help me where can I find the previous transaction and complete it so I can register my domain?! Please I need this fast! Thanks in advance !
ReplyDelete@ Admin - I think your best bet is to post your problem in the Blogger help forum - Here
ReplyDeletehey Paul : Thanks fr this video.. and also the other two posts on why not switching to custom domain was stupid and also the FAQs pre-switching.. however, I have been told that the Credit card transactions are quite a pain (amt deducted but domain not registered etc).. and some of the above comments also bear testimony to that .. I am still not sure that this Credit card transaction will work for me.. Is there any other mode of payment >??
ReplyDeleteGoogle only accept credit cards.I have to date bought over 20 domains through Blogger without a problem, i would think most errors are user related.Make sure to follow the steps carefully..
DeleteDo we "own" the blog with a custom domain or do you need self-hosting for that? I read that custom domain re-direct still has limitations???
ReplyDeleteHi, I bought my domain through Blogger, and the purchase was successful, but my blog is not being redirected, and there is no transition message or anything. I followed all the intructions, and I am able to get into my Google Apps account, and I've tried manually adding the new domain to Blogger, but it keeps saying the address is being used by another account or site. When I type in the the new address, I get a welcome message, but it's just not linking to my blog. Can you help me? I'm not sure what to do now.
ReplyDeleteHi, Paul! Thanks for this video. I have a question: would you know if you'll be able to add subdomains if you purchase a domain through blogger? If so, do you manage this using Google Apps? Or do you get a go daddy account where you can manage all of your domain settings?
