Switching From Blogspot To A Custom Domain Your Questions Answered

Connect Domain Name To Blogger BlogspotLast weekend i published two Blogger Tips on using a custom domain instead of the blogspot sub domain on your blog. The first post covered why in my opinion your must switch from the Blogspot sub domain to a Custom domain and the second showed exactly how easy it is to switch from blogspot to your own domain. The reaction to the posts was great and I'm delighted to see readers placing trust in my opinion and knowing i wont lead them in the wrong direction.I know from the over 50 comments and lots of Emails a big number of blogs have made the change. But like most things in life change generates questions and this was no different. So in this post i want to look at some of the questions that were received in the comments for the posts and by Email.

I will start with some of the basic questions and then get into some of the more tricky issues.

Questions On Changing From Blogspot To A Custom Domain

Will I loose My Followers When I Change To A Custom Domain ? - This refers to the Google Friend Connect Followers and the answer is No you wont loose them.Blogger have posted both on the known issues page and on the Blogger Twitter account that there has been problems with the Followers gadget recently so you could have experienced unrelated problems.

Are there any limitations on bandwidth, visitors etc ? - The answer is No, there are no limits imposed when you change to a custom domain.

Does my feed automatically redirect ? - The short answer is Yes.The default feed will fully redirect. However if you have a feed on feedburner it simply keeps pulling your posts from the blogspot domain. It is important you not change the domain in your Feedburner settings as then you will loose the subscribers. So to wrap up, on Feedburner your feed will stay connected to your old sub domain but that is not an issue.

Do I Lose Page Rank and Alexa Rank ? - As you will be using a brand new domain the answer is yes. However you should not loose traffic or search traffic which is the important factor.

If I change to a custom domain, will the URL of a particular post (not the blog itself) still be functional after a change? In other words, will the old URL direct you to that particular post? - The answer is yes.Every post and every page of your blog will redirect to the new domain. So for example a post published a year ago as :

yourblog.blogspot.com/2010/06/an-amazing-post.html

Would then automatically be :

yourblog.com/2010/06/an-amazing-post.html

Can i control the dns after setting up a new .com domain with blogger ? - Yes and i show you how to access the Domain Name Settings in this video - Create Email Addresses Connected To Your Blogger Custom Domain Plus Access DNS Settings.

If i buy a custom domain from blogger, then is hosting from blogger will be free or we have to pay some more amount for hosting also ? - There is no extra charges, hosting works as it does with the sub domain it's totally free.

If u change to a custom domain, do you still have the blogger features and can you return to a blogsot domain after ? In the case of your domain expiring would you be changed back to a blogspot domain or would your blog stop working ? - You can at any time switch back to the blogspot sub domain by going to your Settings > Publishing at the very top of the page you will see "Switch to blogspot.com".On a side note if your domain expired i think (cant confirm) you would need to manually switch to blogspot it would not be automatic. So basically the option is always there to switch back and if your domain is expiring and you are not going to renew make sure to switch it back yourself.

Will my stats be reset to zero - This refers to Blogger stats available on the stats page and they can be displayed on your blog via the stats gadget.I'm afraid i don't know the answer to this one although i would imagine the would continue on.Perhaps someone that recently bought a domain could let me know in the comments.Update - Geri Centonze has confirmed in the comments your stats are not reset and will indeed continue as before.

Update, Losing Blog List - A lot of comments suggest you loose your blog list once you connect your new domain. So it will make sense to save your blog list links so you can quickly add them again.

Domain Not Connected Blog In Transition

Usually when you buy your custom domain it is in transition for 20 to 30 minutes before the domain is connected.During this time readers can still access the Blogspot address so no harm done. However some people do experience a longer transition period. There is no major advice for this apart from be patient. It is also wise to clear the cache on your browser before checking as the new domain could be connected but your looking at the cached transition page.

  3. I'm very happy with my domain name/switch. I can add to this post that, Blogger includes a warning that the transition could take 3 days. Don't panic if the switch doesn't happen as soon as you'd like it to, it took mine one night, the entire next day and finally later that night the switch was complete. I could have saved myself a headache had I just had a little patience. The transition will happen, so don't stress out! :)

Thanks, Paul for all your advice.

  4. @ Urdu Movies - I did not say transfer your domain to Google apps as you cant, Google is not a domain registrar. If you buy a domain directly from Blogger then you get a free Google apps account with the domain and those options. If your domain is registered with Godaddy there is a way to get an Email address connected, i can't tell you the steps but I'm sure you can find them online.

Once again these posts are about buying the domain directly from Blogger.

    1. Hi Paul,

I have a question about the free Google Apps account with the purchase of a domain. I watched your video on how to activate the Google Apps account, but after I click through the email Google sent me and fill out the "create your first administrator" form, the next page says, "Server error: we are unable to process your request at this time." It has said that all day. What does that mean? Will I lose my domain if I don't get set up with Google Apps?

      Thank you!

  9. I really wanted to have a domain name from blogger. But I do not use credit card and there is no option of payment by netbanking. For "adwords" I pay by netbanking from my bank account. I think blogger should consider this option for payment also. Surely that will lure more customers to have a domain name of their choice. Are the blogger persons listening?

For your question about google adsense do this: Go to your adsense account and add your site with the .com extension. This happens especially with hosted adsense accounts i.e those gotten from Youtube or other third party sites.

  24. Thanks for this post- really helpful. I just switched from www.savvyspending-meghan.blogspot.com to www.savvy-spending.com.
However, I have some confusion over the stats--- mine DID change. In fact, they plummeted over night! I know that both url's are working and I even made a post about the new url address for my readers.
So... I'm not sure what is wrong- is it not reading something correctly? Are my subscribers not getting their email from feedburner?
    Please help! Thanks!

  25. If a sub-domain blog has an "adult content" warning page (we're not talking explicit at all, just some harmeless boob shots in a very few of the entries here and there) is it stll required to have that when switched over to a custom domain?

If it doesn't, is there a risk of Google shutting it down without warning, even though it's a custom domain, or will they leave it alone since it's just very mild "adult" content? Perhaps they will leave it alone even if it were explicit content, since it's a custom domain?

If you aren't sure, any ideas or ever hear of any cases regarding this? So far, nobody's been able to give a definite answer to this one.

  31. hey this is an awesome article! I do have a question or two though. I got my custom domain but I am now at the point where I want to use my custom domain for my site (hosted somewhere else that is not blogger) and then I want to keep my blogspot domain and continue the blog. I cant figure out how to go back to blogspot and transfer that to my other site. I know you said their should be something in the settings that says :go back to blogspot" but I'm not seeing it in the new version of blogger. any help? it would be appreciated.

  32. I purchased a custom domain name and it would not redirect my URL to it. It kept giving me the 404 error. I didn't realize, before I bought the custom domain name, that when I had changed to the new URL, blogger did not automatically redirect the old URL to the new one, so all of my readers lost their feeds. After the purchase of the custom domain name, I couldn't get to my blog at all, so I thought changing it back to the old URL would help. The good news is that my blog is okay now under the old URL, however I don't think my readers are still getting the feed and when typing in the custom domain URL, it is still giving me the 404 error. The redirection of the old URL is supposed to be automatic through Blogger- correct?

You can buy any domain that is available, if it's available it's legal.

Finally when buying a domain for a Blogger blog I think you should buy directly from Blogger.

  56. Hey Paul, I recently just switched to a custom domain but my blog is still hosted by blogger. I have a few questions though, and if you know the answer, I'd appreciate it much.

What happens to my links from other blogs, do I need to tell them to update my link? I understand that they do something to my page rank and right now, I need them coz my page rank is 0 and it kinda sucks to have a zero staring at you. Will it be OK if they still have my old address (which is of course the blogspot.com as opposed to my new .com)? Yknow, I need as much Google juice as I can get. LOL!

Another question still, do you have any idea how I can restore my social counter buttons? I found a Wordpress solution (http://www.blogmarketingacademy.com/keep-social-media-buttons-from-showing-zero/) but it was a futile search for the blogspot counterpart.

Thanks Paul! Your site keeps coming up when I search for some questions regarding my domain name transfer. I've read this post like two times. Very informative.

    Hope to hear from you!

    1. Gamer, First Google Never ever delete a blog. They can take a blog offline but they won't delete it.What I mean by this is you own all the content so if your blog is taken offline you can still access the content to export it elsewere.

OK with that said to answer your question.Google register all domains either on GoDaddy or Enom. You have full access to the GoDaddy or Enom dashboard depending on which hosts your domain. So if you need to move your blog you have full access to the domain to direct it were required.

  83. Hi Paul, thanks for your continually insightful help with blogs. A while ago I bought my blogspot domain but now I want to move over to wordpress. Can you do this? Any thoughts?

I can never find any blog sites which cover this question.

  84. As for loss of traffic after the switch (made a week ago), we have seen a huge drop in page views the moment the switch was made.

It's between 66-75% less traffic when hosted on a sub domain.

    1. I don't quite understand your wording. What you said there means you're getting MUCH MORE traffic on the .com custom domain. Did you mean that?

Or, do you mean it's between 66-75% less traffic THAN when hosted on a sub-domain? Interested in knowing which way it went.

  87. Hi,
Thanks for great advice. I have a question about this too. Maybe someone can help me. I have Facebook comments box and like button after every post on my blog. Do you know if it's possible to save all comments and likes if i switch to custom domain. I tried it and everything was lost. The box and the like button is still here but they empty, zero comments and likes:(.. Do you know if it's possible to save it?
    thanks

    1. Great question Leva.I'm not 100% sure on either point.I would think the likes would of course still be shown on Facebook but they will be not be displayed (number beside the like button) on your blog as it is a different URL.

Now I don't have an answer for the comment box.I really don't know is there a way to export comments.

You might post your question in the Blogger help forum - http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/blogger

And the Facebook Developers Forum - http://facebook.stackoverflow.com/

If you could let us know what you find out that would be great.

  88. Hi There,

Great article! Still need some help though. I purchased a custom domain from blogger so my blog address was at ----.com rather than ----.blogspot.com. I think I may have changed a setting on my feed address, and now when trying to refresh feed items on an iphone app I use and email post subscriptions(to check that the feed works), they don't work. What did I do and how can I change it back? Can I delete the feed and transfer subscribers to a new one with fresh settings?

    Thank you!

    1. Angela, there was no need to change the blog address in your feed.Go back to feedburner and enter the blogspot address again.Although your feed will be feched from the blogspot URL the links will be to the .com.

    1. 30 days to transfer the domain seems extreme. You should still be able to do a temporary 302 re-direct until the transfer goes through.

  93. First things first, hope you are doing well. About 3 months ago I had started 2 blogs with blogger, purchased 2 domains from GoDaddy and gone through the entire process of validating and redirecting. The blogs had worked fine until a week ago, the urls do not direct the non www to the full www.mysite.com and the webmaster tools asked me again to verify ownership, which I did both on blogger and GoDaddy, but still I get the 'verify owner' status when I try to choose the full Url option within the webmasters settings.

  94. Dear Paul,
We all appreciate you so much. A lot of us have been using blogger help and the nitecruzer site and still not found the answer as to why our transfer from blogspot to custom domain..I publish each and every single time under both addresses..can sometimes suddenly stop updating in blogger link lists and follower's gadget dashboards.

Mine has gotten stuck for the second time in a year and I have written and asked for help from various sites..blogger, the enom site etc. and rechecked all enom domain host settings etc. Yet my blog is refusing to show up on the linking lists. I know they show only under the blogspot publishing..but I do BOTH publishings as carefully as I can to ensure a show up..and it is not.

I see that at least four other bloggers have asked this same question and I read every single entry here, and could not find a response from you with any suggestions. Help would be so appreciated!

I forgot to renew my domain (blogger-godaddy) that suddenly I realized it already 60 days before they permanently deleted my domain. Already revert it manually to .blogspot.com but how can I get it back my domain? Please, I really need my domain back again. When I tried to use my old domain, they said somebody had already taken my domain (that's me!). Thank you!

Someone asked a while back about Adsense but you didn't reply. My new domain is running but my Adsense ads are just empty squares...any idea what the deal is? Do they automatically have to re approve it?

My account is in good standing, but the ads no longer work since changing to a .com with godaddy. Blogger is still hosting my page, so I don't get why the ads do not work. Any help would be appreciated.

  106. Awesome post, Paul! I've just bought my custom domain Luxury Haven from GoDaddy few days ago. I think it's working well. I read in your post above "It is important you not change the domain in your Feedburner settings as then you will loose the subscribers." However, in some other blogs, it's saying that we should update the url in FeedBurner and other custom feeds, Google Sitemaps / Google Webmaster Tools etc. I'm new to all these, so I'm a bit confused. Could you kindly advise? Thanks!

    1. Nico the blogspot domain will still perform in search and over time it will be the new domain that will take over. This is as long as you did a proper 301 with the new domain. So people should see no big change in traffic.

BTW I looked at your blog and I can't see what keywords you were on the first page for ? From what I can see your blog was not ranked for any keywords apart from the actual blog title.

  109. Hi Paul -- thanks for all these great posts and tips. I recently bought my own domain thru go daddy and dropped the blogspot. However, as soon as I changed my blogger settings to redirect, my feedburner subscribers dropped from 8,000 to 2,000. My new domain is still be hosted on Google servers (as opposed to Go Daddy).

Also, everything that's ever been pinned from my blog on Pinterest, is now considered 'Suspicious Link' because of the reroute. That's impacting my traffic, but my overall analytics have been wonky since making the change. I'm so frustrated! Is there fixes...if not, is it easy to switch back?
