Latest Google Page Rank Update Underway Feburary 2012

I know all bloggers and webmasters keep an eye on their sites Google Page Rank.In short Page Rank is an indication of how Google rank your site in a scale from 1 to 10.Check out a previous post with more on Google Page Rank.We have been expecting a Page Rank update by the end of January start of February and i can confirm today that update has started.This site has seen a page rank increase from 4/10 to 5/10, i know this only happened today from a stats on our BuySellAds.

New AdSense Toolbar Shows Earnings And More

The AdSense team have just released a toolbar extension for the Chrome browser.This AdSense toolbar has two main features.Firstly you can view your earnings without having to the leave page your on to visit your AdSense dashboard.This is somewhat useful but just saves a few seconds.The second feature however seems much more useful.With the toolbar installed when you visit your site your ad units will have an overlay which displays their performance.Both the earnings tab and overlay display the earnings for the current day, yesterdays earnings and earnings for the last seven days.Both also have a link to your AdSense dashboard while the unit overlay also has a link to edit the unit.

"..When viewing your website, this feature will show you a snapshot of your AdSense account performance as a widget in the corner of your browser window. It also includes ad overlays that describe the recent performance of specific ad units, and gives you the option to access AdSense directly.."

Google Plus - Create A Facebook Style Fan Page On Google Plus

Google Plus has been live online since the end of June 2011, while it started growing at the speed of a runaway train questions are being asked as to it's future.Recently however Google have added a Google Plus Pages option for Business, Bands and products.Google Plus Pages are not just like Facebook Pages they have almost the exact same format.So for us Bloggers, we can as on Facebook create a page for our blog on Google Plus.Creating the page is quick and easy and in this post i will walk you through he steps.

Create A Google Plus Fan Page For Your Blog

Step 1. Go to the Google Plus Pages : Create Google Plus Page.

Step 2. Pick a category in on the left of the page, Click "Product Or Band".

Step 3. Add your page name (The Name Of Your Blog), and blog address in the website field.

Step 4. Agree to the terms and click create, that's it.

A Strange Fix For Missing Google Plus One Buttons

It's been a few weeks since the launch of Google Plus One and the Plus One Button.I'm sure many of you like me jumped on board and added the Plus One sharing or recommendation button to your blogs.I had it in a few positions and all my posts were been plus one'd (Thanks) then bang it's gone ? The script is in the head section of the template, the button code is were it should be but no sign of the button.I searched online for a solution and just found more similar questions "Were is the plus one button ?", "My plus one button is gone how can i fix it ?".

I think Plus One can be an important factor in which links people click in search results so i really wanted it back.I presume something in the template was in conflict with the button code but couldn't see what.Then i found a fix in a quiet unorthodox way.

I remember reading Google had partnered with Add This the social bookmarking service so i thought i would try the Add This version of the button, worth a go.When i added the code for the Add This version of the plus one button strangely all the plus one buttons worked again! Now you would think it is the script from Add This that is getting it to work but if i add just the script they don't work the actual button needs to be added also.

A strange Fix For The Google Plus One Button

Here is the code for the Add This version of the plus one button simply add it to your blogs template.On Blogger via a html/javascript gadget in your sidebar on Wordpress a text sidebar gadget would do.As the other buttons were now working i placed the add this version in the footer out of the way.

Awesome New Google Search Style Search Bar For Blogger

I'm sure you will have noticed the new Google design as covered in the post Evolving the Google design and experience on the official Google blog.While the changes have been subtle some stand out like the new sleek search bar on results pages.The new search bar has a more modern minimalist look with rounded corners and hover effect.But one new feature i quiet like is as you type your text into the search field an X appears than can be clicked to remove your text.Yes it's nothing major but still a neat feature none the less.So in this post i will show you how you can re-create the new Google search bar and use it on your blog.

Once on your blog it will look the very same, using jQuery for the X delete button and your blogs default search to generate results.This was covered on the Awesome Queness.Com design blog and with just a few changes i have it ready to go For Blogger.

Google Update Page Rank Has Yours Increased ?

Google today updated their page rank (PR) or the so called toolbar page rank.Page rank is basically a signal of how important any given page is in Googles eyes.Page rank goes from 0 (zero) to 10 (Ten) with 10 being the highest thus the best.The page rank we see is called toolbar page rank as it was first displayed on the Google toolbar although there are many other ways to view it.In general people refer to their website or blog PR by the PR of the home page, but every single page on your blog will have it's own PR.More on Page rank can be found in this post from when i informed you of the last update in January - Google Page Rank Information and even more from the great Matt Cutts Here.

In this post i want to look at how the change effected My Blogs, What will an increase mean, How to check your blogs page rank and some tips on increasing your page rank.

Our Page Rank ?

The update was very kind to Spice Up Your Blog as it has jumped from PR3 to PR5, many posts have a page rank of 3-4 also.It is a small percentage of blogs that reach PR5 (Half way up the ladder) so I'm delighted to achieve it and see my hard work pay off.As a large part of Page Rank is from people linking to a site i would like to thank everyone that links to us and hope you continue to do so.I actually got a bit of a surprise to see our Blogger template site BestBloggerTemplates.Net jumped from PR0 to PR3, considering the domain was only connected a few months ago (Was formally www.templates.spiceupyourblog.com) it's great.I have had other blogs also increase, my Social Icon site also jumped from PR0 to PR3.

What Will Increased Page Rank Do ?

When we talk about things like page rank it is important to remember it is just one signal.Spice Up Your Blog going from PR3 to PR5 does not necessarily indicate that i will see an instant increase in traffic from Google.It does show I'm heading in the right direction and performing well in search but many more factors come into play.

Create Email Addresses Connected To Your Blogger Custom Domain Plus Access DNS Settings And More

This week we looked at using custom domains on Blogger Blogs, why you should get a custom domain and the steps to buy and connect a custom domain on Blogger.Those posts have been popular and I'm delighted to see many of you have took my advice and bought domains for your blog getting rid of the ugly blogspot.In those posts i mentioned Google Apps and how when you buy a domain through Blogger you get a free Google apps account.Google apps actually offer some great features that are all available to you once you buy your domain.Two of the main features of Google apps are the option to create Email addresses associated with the domain you bought.So you can create for example yourname @yourblog.com or info @yourblog.com and so on.Another feature of Google apps is the option to access your DNS or Domain Settings.So you can log into your domain host account and access things like Cname records.

The New Google +1 - Add All The Plus 1 Button Styles To Your Blog

Google have been experimenting with their +1 (Plus One) button for a while and today they released it for websites and blogs.The plus one button lets you recommend things you like to friends and they will see your recommendations in Google search results and over time in Ads and possibly other places.In search now you can see the plus one's of your friends, contacts from Gmail, Google Reader and Google Buzz.So it makes sense to allow readers to plus one your content and recommend it to their friends.Adding the button you your blog will give the readers the option to plus you up !

+1 In The Default Blogger Share Buttons

Blogger users will be happy to know if you have the default share buttons enabled the plus one button may already be on your blog.Below is a screenshot You can see them working on the home page of this blog.

If you don't have them enabled here are the instructions from Blogger Buzz -

To add the +1 button to your blog, you’ll need to enable Share buttons on Blogger. To do this, go to Design > Page Elements on your Blogger dashboard, find the Blog posts area, click on Edit, and select the “Show Share Buttons” option. If you are already using Share buttons, the +1 button will automatically show up as a new share option.

You know i was never a fan of the default blogger share buttons but this does give them some merit now.

You can also grab a standalone button to use on your blog by visiting Google +1 For Webmasters.

There are 4 sizes of button to choose from once you choose you generate two snippets of code.The script with the message "Place this tag in your head or just before your close body tag" goes directly before your blogs </head> tag and the second code goes were you want the button to appear.

How I Got My Mistakenly Closed AdSense Account Reopened

On Saturday last (30/04/11) i clicked the AdSense icon in my bookmarks toolbar as i do most days to see how my ads were performing (Don't you find checking your blogs stats and AdSense addictive?).This time however instead of going to my AdSense homepage or dashboard i was presented with a strange update or apply to AdSense type page.I say update / apply page because i couldn't really figure out what the page was or what information it was looking for.This started a chain of events which seen my account vanish, all my ads vanish and possibly all my unpaid earnings vanish.

I guess in this post i want to look at the steps i took, the frustration in dealing with any Google service when it comes to customer service and the patience you need in this type of situation.

Google Now Use Twitter Facebook And Site Speed To Help Rank Your Blog

Google originally made its name by using a Page rank system based on links throughout the web to return relevant search results to users.Although there were many search engines available before Google the page rank system simply returned better results to users.Page Rank (Googles Internal Page Rank Not So Much Toolbar Page Rank, a long story) is still the major factor in how search results are delivered and things like Back links and anchor text are still the major players and always will be.However over the years Google have added lots of other factors in how they return their search results, they claim there is over 200 components used to deliver the results we see.A couple of noticeable more recent additions to this are Social Media and Site Speed.

Use Blogger Template Designer Fonts On Custom Blogger Templates

Back in January this year (2011) Blogger added 77 very cool fonts to the Blogger template designer.The fonts they added were from the Google Web Fonts directory and included some awesome bold fonts, handwriting fonts and fun fonts that could give your blog a unique look.If you use a template from the template designer you simply go to the template designer editor then choose and save any font.While this was great news for Bloggers using templates from the template designer unfortunately Bloggers using Custom Blogger templates could not use the fonts so easily.So if you have a custom Blogger Template (A Template You Downloaded Online From A Blogger Template Site) in this post i will show you how you can manually add any of the fonts to your blog.

This is a video tutorial so you can follow the steps in the video.A summery with the extra information you need is below the video.

Custom Fonts For Custom Templates - Video Tutorial

Step 1. Go to Google Web Fonts

Step 2. Choose the font you want to use from the list and click on it.

Step 3. On the next page Click the use this font link.

Step 4. In your Blogger Dashboard click > Design > Edit Html.

Step 5. From Google Web Fonts Copy the first snippet of code and paste it directly below <head> in your templates html.

Note 1 - You must add a forward slash (/) to the end of the code as shown in the video.

Note 2, XML error message: The reference to entity "v1" must end with the ';' delimiter. - If there is more than one version of the font you want to use it will be defined by the tag &v1 or &v2 etc..This will not be accepted in your template so we simply change the & symbol in front of v1 to the following :

Here you can see it using the Artifika font :

Step 6. From Google Web Fonts Copy and paste the second snippet of code directly above ]]></b:skin> in your template.

Step 7. You now need to change H1 in the code to set were the font will be used on your blog watch the video for the options.

And that's it you can now choose from lots of cool fonts to use on your blogs titles no matter what template your using.

Add A YouTube Subscribe To Channel Gadget To Your Blog

You may have noticed I'm back making some video tutorials and the last few posts on Spice Up Your Blog have included videos.Over the last few months i have been making videos for an Ebook I'm working on so had been slacking off on creating tutorials to go with the posts here.The videos i create for Spice Up Your Blog i host on YouTube and then Embed within the posts.You may do the same thing on your blog, if you do you may also like to promote Your YouTube channel on your blog.With that in mind in this post i will show you how you can add a very cool YouTube Subscribe widget to your blog.

The widget is very user friendly and like the Facebook Fan Page / Like Page widget users can subscribe to your channel without the need to leave the page.You channels image thumbnail, Username, Number of videos and Number of subscribers are displayed along with the YouTube logo.You can also change the width and height of the gadget.

Important Information On Images You Upload To Blogger

Since Google took over Blogger in 2003 they have fully integrated almost every part of the system with their other services.In fact if you stand back and look at it Blogger was the perfect acquisition for Google as they can run so many of their other products alongside it.

Let me show you why I'm referring to :

Blogger - Your Blogger account is now part of your Google account.

Picasa - The images you upload to your blog are hosted on Google's image hosting service, once you upload your first image a picasa account is created for you.

Feedburner - Google own the most popular Rss Feed service and have recently taken advantage of this to offer extra options for Blogger users.

YouTube - Videos you add to your blog will be hosted on YouTube and recently you got the option to add YouTube videos directly from your post editor.

AdSense - You can monetize your blog with AdSense directly from your blogs Design > Add a gadget page.Many people with websites and other blogs find it hard to get approved for AdSense, in fact some people create a Blogger blog in an effort to get approval.

Google Fonts - Google have recently integrated their web fonts with the template designer allowing users to use a wide selection of fonts on their blogs.

AdWords - Over the Christmas Google offered a free $100 voucher to Blogger users.I actually took them up on the offer and have to say I'm delighted with the results, i had to add $5 to get the campaign started but i then had $105 of AdWords advertising.

Webmaster Tools - Blogs you create are now automatically added to your webmaster tools account, when you log in you have a one click option to add a blog rather than going through the verification process.

Google Friend Connect - Also known as Followers, the Followers gadget is added to each blog and other gadgets can also be added from the directory.

Remember your Google Email or Gmail you use to log into Blogger is actually your Goolge account an can be used to log into all these services and more.

This is part of how Google manage to grow, they acquire websites and services they know they can connect with other sites they already own.Other Google services i also use in connection with my blog include Google Code, i host all the scripts i share with your on Spice Up Your Blog on Google Code, Google Affiliate Network, Although i don't use it as much as previously.

So by using Blogger, Google are introducing you to many of their other services that you may continue even using if you stop blogging in the future.

Google Accounts

This brings me to the point of this post and how having all these services connected to one account can cause trouble down the line.In a recent post on The Real Blogger Status a great Blogger related blog by one of the top moderators in the Blogger Help Forum called Nitecruzer or Chuck he made a great point about the images you use on your blog.

As all images you upload to your blog are hosted on Google's images hosting site Picasa, if for some reason you closed your Picasa account all those images would vanish.That would be a disaster to any Blogger, but you may ask why would you close your Picasa account ? Chuck makes a few examples.

If you are a member of a team blog (Blogs can have up to 100 contributors, more info can be found via Settings > Permissions) and in the future you have stopped contributing and decide to close you Google account.

If you transfer the ownership of your blog you may decide to delete the Google account that was connected.

Probably the most common occurrence would be changing the account you use to log into and post to your blog.I am the perfect example of this, when i created Spice Up Your Blog i was using the Email PaulCrowe77(at)Gmail.com, as the blog grew i decided to have a unique Email attached to the blog and everything related.So i created Spiceyourblog(at)Gmail.com, i then gave that new Email permission to the blog and still use that every time i log in.Now...I had published around 40 posts before i changed so if i were to delete PaulCrowe77(at)Gmail.com all the images from those 40 posts would be gone !

I hope i haven't lost you, if you don't understand the permissions process of inviting people to your blog it could be hard to follow.But i guess the best thing to do is simply don't delete any Google account and you will never have anything to worry about.If your not using a Google account just let it sit there in obscurity, it's not like it will effect you in any way.

Google Page Rank Finally Updated After 8 Months

Just this week i wrote a post asking Why Google Page Rank Had Not Been Updated For 8 Months.In fact it was a question a lot of people were asking.While Google are constantly updating Page Rank internally the External Page rank the public can view Via the Google Toolbar and Page Rank services had not updated since April 2010.Today i noticed a Page Rank change on some of my Blogs including this one (I bet they read my post and took my advice :D).This has come in the middle of rumors of Google completely scrapping Page Rank and Google losing the exclusive rights to page rank.

Why has Google Page Rank Not Updated For 8 Months

It's been 8 months since the last update of Google Page Rank, a system that was updated every 3-4 months for the last few years.In this post we ask why, first a little on the Little Green Page Rank Bar.

Google Page Rank is something you will have often heard me mention here on Spice Up Your Blog.Page Rank is an algorithm Google use to rank pages on the Internet by importance.Going from 0 to 10 with a page rank 10 being the highest, page rank exists in two ways.Firstly there is an internal page rank kept by Google, this page rank is only known by Google, is constantly updated and is used with lots of other factors to determine a pages importance.The importance Google place in a page will of course effect where that page appears in search results.Secondly there is the visible page rank or toolbar page rank.This is page rank that anyone can see, is updated every few months and can be seen on the Google Toolbar.

If you have the Google Toolbar you may have seen the separate little Green Bar that fills to display the page rank.There are a number of other ways to check the page rank of a page.You can use sites like PRchecker to generate the page rank of any page and you can even have a gadget on your blog that will display your page rank to your visitors.Remember every page on a website or blog will have it's own page rank.Unlike Alexa Rank that gives the same Ranking for every page in a domain, Page rank Gives the Home Page and every other page an individual rank.

OK with that out of the way here is the question, why has Google Toolbar Page Rank Not been Updated since April 2010 (8 Months At The Time Of Writing).Google had been updating Page Rank every 3 to 4 months and the last 2 years seen an overall update at the turn of the year.

Firstly, Google seem to regret ever making Page Rank available to the public.If you believe what you read (Or what i read) they play down the importance of Toolbar page rank.This has lead to talk of Google giving up or phasing out Toolbar page rank.Secondly, the patient for Page Rank is actually owned by Stanford University.Google has exclusive licensing rights to Page Rank from 2003 to 2011, so this year unless Google take action others could also use the page rank formula.The actual patent expires in 6 years 2017.So will this force the hand of Google and make them give it up, or could we have "Google Page Rank", "Yahoo Page Rank" and "Ask Page Rank" ?

Google tell us Page Rank is not that important after all and they may be losing the system altogether.For me that stinks a little...

Page Rank Importance

Page Rank has been a visible sign of progress for Bloggers, seeing the page rank of your pages increase let you know you were going in the right direction.Yes it may not be hugely important in the overall picture but it was something.Why do we check our stats three times a day, why do we check the number of Rss subscribers daily, why do we check our social Followers or Fans ?

All these are visible markers of progress that give Bloggers especially new Bloggers reassurance that they are heading in the right direction.Getting 5 new Rss Subscribers is not a big deal to a Blog with over 500 but going from 10 to 15 is an injection for newbies.In the same way having your page rank jump helps give some extra drive.

There is still talk of Page Rank being updated this month and some people have reported seeing internal pages (Post Pages For Blogs) being updated in the months since the last overall Update.Either way i think Google should let us know whats going on.Important or not important in the bigger picture, in the smaller picture Google Page rank helps attract Advertisers, Contributors, Return Visitors, Subscribers, Followers and feeds our Egos !

Subscribers And Followers You Ask - Why is the Feedburner Gadget with the number of subscribers displayed on blogs with big subscriber counts ? Surely the number of subscribers wont effect your decision on whether you should subscribe.Why do many of these blogs also show the number of Twitter followers ? Because these factors help show the credibility of a blog and so does Page Rank.If ten thousand people subscribe it must be good, if the page rank if 5 it must be good.

I think Page Rank should be updated or Removed completely as the current page rank displayed is not accurate.The lack of news from the large SEO websites leads me to think we will see an update soon but will that be the last, what do you think ?

Interlinking Blog Posts For Better Search Engine Optimization

In the last post i talked about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and more to the point the lack of SEO on many blogs.In this post we will look at how simply linking within your blog can have a very positive effect on how your blog performs in search.Once again we have to remember Google love links and like the little guy from Pac Man following the dots the Google bot crawls around following every link it finds.You will often hear people talk about the importance of links to your blog from other sites and in the same manner links within your blog have a positive effect.Another important factor in links to your blog is how those links are formatted.The anchor text of a link helps Google index the linked page.So when you write your posts you should be creating 2-3 links to pages from within your blog using relative anchor text.It's very easy and adds one minute to the time it takes to write a post.

Interlinking Your Blog Posts

Anchor Text - Anchor text is the text that makes up a link, the actual words people click on.On many blogs i see people create links with the text Click Here.You should however be using Keywords that describe the destination of the link.If for example i wanted to link to the last post i mentioned above called "Best SEO Tips And 150 Free Backlinks Every Day" i would create the link with text like this, Best SEO And Backlink Tips not Click Here.By adding keywords and describing the page linked to we help Google index that page.There is a bit more to it than that but you get the idea.You can just pick one or two words in a sentence and turn them into a relevant link, remember the goal is not to get people clicking these links but to get Google following them.

As well as linking to posts you can link to labels pages, this is something i regularly do on Spice Up Your Blog.If you have a second blog you can link to that blog within your post.Once you have links throughout your blog you are sending 'Link Juice' right through the heart of your Blogs archive !

Lets imagine Google crawl you latest post and follow a link to a previous post, on that post they follow a link back to another post, there they follow a link to a labels page, they follow the most recent post using that label and so on.Be careful and don't stuff every post full of links as this can be seen as spam.

Create And Add A Second Google Friend Connect Followers Gadget To Blogger

This is another post that answers a question i was asked by a reader, however this time it was a reader of Best Blogger Templates.On Best Blogger Templates i have a Followers Gadget in the sidebar and a second in the Footer section and a reader wanted to know how i added the second Followers gadget.Many people especially Blogger users like to use the Followers option to keep up to date with their favorite blogs.When you Follow a blog you can see all the updates directly from your Blogger dashboard.So it makes sense to make it as easy as possible for readers on your blog to become followers.To do this most Blogger blogs add the Followers gadget to their sidebar via the 'Add A Gadget' menu in their blogs design page.This is a very easy option but for some reason you are limited to only one followers gadget on your blog and the customize options are very limited.

But the Followers gadget you add via 'Add A Gadget' is just one option, did you know you can create and style a custom Followers gadget and add more than one gadget to your blog ?.The followers gadget you use on Blogger is actually a 'Google Friend Connect' gadget that has been slightly altered for Blogger.In this Blogger Tip i will show you how you can create more Followers Gadgets and fully customize the appearance.By adding a second Followers Gadget to for example your blogs footer you will see an increase in Followers.I will also show you how to add your second Followers gadget in different areas such as below all your blogs posts.The new Followers gadget will have your current Followers displayed and work in the very same way.

Create And Customize Second Followers Gadget

Step 1. First follow this link to the Google Friend Connect Home Page.

Step 2. If you are not logged into your Google account log in.

Step 3. In the left sidebar you will see a list of your blogs choose the Blog you want the Followers gadget for.

Step 4. You will now see a number of options connected to Google Friend Connect, Click 'Add The Members Gadget'.

Step 5. You are now ready to style your Followers gadget.

Gadget Size

Width - If you intend to use the gadget in your sidebar or footer leave the width as it is.If you want to add the Followers gadget below your posts change it depending on your blogs width, 400 for narrow posting area, 500 for average posting area, 600 for wide posting area (On Spice Up Your Blog i would choose 600).

Rows Of Faces - The rows of face will determine the height of the gadget.

Gadget Style

Choose Colors - You can use any colors to style the Followers gadget and have it blend with your Blogs Template.The easiest way to blend the gadget is by setting all the backgrounds and borders to Transparent.To do this leave the hex color section empty (The hex section is the six numbers that define the color).

Generate Code - Once you are happy with your Followers gadget design scroll down and click Generate Code.

Add Your Second Followers Gadget To Your Blog

Add To Sidebar Or Other Gadget Sections.

Step 1. In your Blogger dashboard click Design > Add A Gadget > Choose Html/Javascript from the pop up menu.

Step 2. Paste the code for your Followers gadget into the Html/Javascript Gadget and save.You can now return to the Design page of your blog and Drag and Drop the gadget into position.

Add Followers Gadget Below All Posts

Step 1. In your Blogger Dashboard click Design > Edit Html > Expand Widget Templates

Step 2. Find the following piece of code in your blogs Html : (Click Ctrl and F for a search bar to help find the code - More Info)

The Google custom search bar returns in my opinion the most accurate results for your blog.The search bar itself is compact and stylish and can be easily added to your blog.For those of you not familiar with the Google Custom search bar it basically looks the same as the search on the Google home page and when added to your blog returns results in the same format.The big difference is the results returned are All posts on Your Blog.This is a great way to let the readers of your blog quickly find exactly what they are looking for.The Google custom search bar has been vastly improved over the years and is still constantly getting better but i have always had one Big Issue with using Google Custom search on my Blogger blogs.

One of the great options you are offered when setting up a Google custom search box for your blog is to open the results within your site or blog.So instead of readers leaving your blog and going to a separate Google page to see the results of their search they will see the results on a page that is actually part of your blog.This has a number of benefits here are three of the main ones :

- It's never good to send readers away from your blog and the separate Google page does not have a direct link back to your homepage.
- As they stay in your blog it increases your views and the search results page will be crawled by Google helping SEO.
- Displaying the results within your blog looks much more professional.

That's Fantastic but because of the minimum requirements set by Google such as minimum width of search results pages Blogger users cant actually choose the option to display the Search results on within their blog...Until Now !

In this post i will show you how you can create a totally unique page on your blog and display the results from Google Custom search on that page.

There are a number of step involved to get your search bar and search results page.

- You need to create a new Google custom search bar for your blog.Only AdSense members have the option to Embed results in their Blog if you have not yet joined AdSense apply here - Google AdSense.

- You need to create the page for the results and add code to your template to customize the page.

Don't worry i will walk you through all the steps.So lets get stared, make sure to back up your template and take your time.

Open Google Custom Search Results In Your Blog

Create The Page For The Google Search Results

Step 1. First we will create the page that displays your search results.From your Blogger dashboard click 'New Post' or 'Edit Posts' > and in the top menu click 'Edit Pages' > Now Click 'New Page'.

Step 2. Add A Title Like 'Search Results' to your page but leave the actual content area totally blank and publish the page.You will now be asked how you would like the page to appear choose 'No Gadget - Link To Pages Manually' and publish.OK you will now be presented with the option to view the page, click that link.

Step 3. For the next step we need the URL of the blank page you just created so copy the URL from the address bar and keep it or you can go back for it when needed.

That's the first part covered We will Create the search bar In your AdSense account.

Get The Search Bar Code From AdSense

Many of you will have created an AdSense custom search bar previously and it's a fairly straight forward process, this time we just have to chose to use the 'Open Results In My Own Site' Option.Lets have a look :

1. Log Into AdSense

2. Click the 'Get Ads' option the the top menu > Tick 'AdSense For Search' and continue.

3. AdSense walk you through the steps of creating the Search Bar:

- In the third page you will see the 'Opening of search results page' section > Choose 'Open Results In My Own Site.

- Below this is 'Enter URL where search results will be displayed' > Enter the URL of the page you created above and just leave the width at 800px then scroll down.

- You will be asked to choose the style of the search results page > I have set up the page to work with the default pallet so leave this and move on.

- The next page requires you to accept the AdSense Terms and name your search bar (The name of the bar is only to help locate it in your AdSense account and is not important).Click 'Submit and get Code'.

- Usually you would now be presented with one snippet of code for the search bar this time you will get two.The first snippet is for the search bar and the second is for the search results page.Save both pieces of code or keep the page open as you will need both later.

OK back to your Blogger Dashboard (Are you keeping up)

Add The Search Page Code To Your Template

Step 1. In your dashboard click 'Design' > 'Edit Html'

Important - We now need to add a few things to the code.

1.Where you see URL-OF-YOUR-PAGE( Twice) in red - Replace with the URL of the blank page you created in step 1.

2. Where You See YOUR-BLOGS-TITLE in blue - Replace with the title of your blog (You could also use 'Search Results' etc..)

3. Where you see URL-OF-YOUR-HOME-PAGE (Twice) - Replace with the URL of your blogs home page.

4. Where you see  - Replace with the second section of code provided by Google AdSense.

Add The Search Bar - OK if you took your time and sure all the code is in the right place save your template.Now add the code for the actual search bar you your blog > Just head to your Design page > Add A Gadget > Choose Html/Javascript > Paster in your search bar code and save.

That's it go test out your search bar - Very Important - While you can test your new search bar Do Not click the ads on the search results page !

Google alerts is a free service that has been available for some time now and can be used by anyone.Getting started is easy and you can get alerts on key words and phrases relating to any subject.Once you submit the keywords you want to be alerted about Google will send you an Email every day with the best news story's and Blog posts related to those words and prases.For example if your blog covers 'Dog Grooming' you can submit the term 'Dog Grooming' and you will get an Email every day with the latest story's and posts that include that term.

At the moment i have subscribed to get alerts every day on the best news and posts with the keywords 'Blogger Tips' and 'Blogger Tricks'.This has proved very helpful as there are some great tips posted on blogs that i would otherwise never see.Of course you cant copy their content but it will give you ideas.
