Lindsey Leesmann, a communication specialist at Grantham University, says that one of the best ways to overcome writer’s block, or any creative block for that matter, is to get away from your desk and change the scenery. Expand your creativity and find inspiration at one of the following locations.
1. The Library

Most people would agree that a library is one of the best places to hone your creativity. First of all, it gives you a change of scenery to help you break that creativity block. It’s also full of useful information from countless sources to inspire you. Plus, it’s a nice quiet place where you won’t encounter interruptions. Who knows, you may pick up a book that leads to a breakthrough. Just remember to be quiet when exclaiming “Eureka!”.
2. Coffee-House

While some people wouldn’t agree that a coffee-house is a good place to hone your creativity, others swear by it. For example, J.K. Rowling spent much of her time in a café while writing the Harry Potter books, and countless other creative professionals use coffee houses as their safe haven. Depending on the type of work that you’re doing, a coffee-house can easily spark creativity; for example, if you’re writing a book, you can use surrounding conversations and stranger appearances as inspiration for your characters. Just make sure you’re taking care of your barista!
3. Hotel Room
If you’re a traveling creative professional, then a hotel room could become a place of inspiration. It offers a new scene in a quiet, comfortable setting that could help your creativity flow. If you’re having trouble in the hotel room, head down to the lobby or take a walk around the block to discover other inspiring settings. It’s always a good idea to ask your booking agent about the view from your room. A more scenic view will provide you with beauty that can’t be seen otherwise. It’s true: many incredible works have been completed from the humble hotel room and it’s almost certain many more will be.
4. City Park

Some people say that a city park is too distracting, but a city park is often the perfect place to paint a picture, gather inspiration, or practice creativity. Oftentimes it’s simple to find a park bench tucked away from the mainstream park to give you a quiet place to clear your mind and relieve a creative block. As you observe nature and the people around you, you discover insight on how to portray your artwork, making a park an excellent place to hone your creativity. You don’t even have to worry about not being able to access the internet, even if you’re living in a smaller city WiFi is likely available in some parks or just nearby. Otherwise, you can always tether your phone.
5. Your Backyard
If a city park is too distracting for you, then you can often find the same type of inspiration from your own backyard. If you can’t leave home, you can always step away from your desk and out the door while you clear your mind, observe the world, and ponder ideas that could ignite a visionary idea for your project. It helps to have a seating area, a garden or any landmark to enjoy. You’ll find creativity is just a couple steps away.
As a creative professional, it’s very important to sharpen your saw and find a place to let your creativity blossom. It’s a good idea to find a place that you can clear your mind and let the creative juices flow. Whether that’s a park, your backyard or a café, you’ll find it easier to be creative.
